01

Context

WorkReel is a London-based startup founded in 2021: a video talent marketplace connecting hospitality job seekers with employers through short video profiles instead of paper CVs. I joined as the brand & product designer to shape the entire experience from the ground up.

02

The problem

In hospitality, hiring is fast and personality-driven, yet the tools were built for corporate CVs. A paper resume can’t show whether someone is warm, energetic, or great with people, and juggling LinkedIn, job boards and messaging was too slow for venues that need to fill a shift this week.

Screen flows

The journeys became two parallel flows over one shared component set. Mapping them side by side was how I checked that neither audience had been given the other's leftovers.

Five Directions, One Decision

Instead of a single big reveal, I designed five visual directions for WorkReel - each with its own key screens, moodboard, type, and palette. Each one answered the same question differently: how should hiring in the service sector feel? Seeing them side by side let the client react to real screens, not abstract taste words.

The final choice was the green direction with bolder typography, it had the energy and modern edge the brand needed. We folded in the full-screen photo layout from a more professional concept, landing on a system that felt both bold and credible. Aligning on feel first meant no wasted revision rounds later.

The insight

In hospitality, personality is the résumé. A 30-second video tells an employer more than a page of bullet points: so the whole app should feel less like a job board and more like meeting someone.

I designed around video as the primary content: fast to record, effortless to browse, and human on both sides of the match.

The work: key decisions

#1 Full-screen video browsing, swipe to decide

Why: a cinematic, one-profile-at-a-time feed puts personality first and makes evaluating a candidate feel quick and human, and not like scanning a spreadsheet.

#2 Key details float over the video, never bury it

Why: pay, availability, distance and role sit as glanceable chips beside the reel, so employers get the facts without ever leaving the human moment.

#3 One-tap apply and instant messaging

Why: hospitality moves fast, so applying and starting a conversation had to take seconds: collapsing the gap between “interested” and “hired”.

#4 A complete brand + scalable design system

Why: a small team needed to ship fast and pitch investors, so I built the identity, landing page and a reusable component library that kept everything consistent and demo-ready.

Reflection

This was my first time owning both brand and product for a venture-stage startup. If I revisited it, I’d add lightweight analytics to the video feed to learn which profile lengths and framings actually convert to hires: and feed that back into the recording flow.
